Where to stay in Dubrovnik as a Solo Traveler

As a solo traveler, you would want to prioritize safety, affordability, a social atmosphere, and excellent transportation links for easy exploring. Our top recommendation would be at:

1. Old Town for proximity to attractions and nightlife.

2. Pile, just outside of Old Town, for cheaper accommodations for a short walk.

3. Gruž is great if you are also a budget-conscious traveler as you can find plenty of affordable hostels and guesthouses. Perfect if visiting Dubrovnik for a day or two and then continuing up the coast via public transit.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik as a Family

The best areas for families are often a bit quieter, offer resort-style amenities, and provide easy access to family-friendly beaches. Our top recommendation would be at:

1. Lapad Peninsula has plenty of family-friendly resorts with kids’ pool and calm beaches.

2. Pile or Ploče, close to Dubrovnik Old Town with less crowd and noise, has more modern stays and is within walking distance.

3. Old Town has its advantages for families. Avoiding public transit, Ubers or even the walk across the busy streets just outside the city walls may be best for young children.

Family Tip: While the Old Town is magical, it involves many stairs and can be very crowded and loud, making it less ideal for families especially with small kids. Consider staying outside the walls and taking a short, frequent bus ride (Line 4, 6) into the center.

Where to stay in Dubrovnik as a Travel Couple

For a romantic getaway, couples often look for stunning views, luxurious amenities, and a balance of seclusion and accessibility to fine dining and the beautiful Old Town. Our top recommendation would be at:

1. Old Town (Stari Grad) is perfect for couples who love history and medieval vibes. You can experience walking around the Old Town before the crowd arrives and secure a bench to watch the sunset at harbor viewpoint (close to Ploče gate).

2. Ploče is a great option for couples who love panoramic views with the Old Town and the sea. Ploče also has plenty of luxurious accommodations perfect for couples celebrating anniversaries and special occasions.

3. Lapad Peninsula is a more secluded and quieter area for couples looking for a more romantic vibe, with some downtime at a beach. Great for longer stays.

Things to Note Prior to Choosing Where to Stay in Dubrovnik

  1. If you are planning to stay in the Old Town, know that there are 3 main gates to enter the Old Town – Pile Gate (main transportation hub), Ploče Gate and Buza Gate. If you have don’t want to carry your luggage across the entire town, it is imperative to know which one is closest to your stay so you can also plan where to get dropped off (if using public transport).
  2. There are plenty of stairs in the Old Town which may not be the most ideal for travelers or family members with limited mobility. Read reviews or open Street View in Google Map. The main street Stratun is flat, as is one block north and a couple blocks south of this street.
  3. If you plan to do several day trips, it would be helpful to know where your bus stop is when deciding where to stay.
  4. If staying outside Old Town, ask your hotel if they offer shuttle service as this would save you time planning logistics.
