Ferry from Langkawi to Koh Lipe

The most popular and straightforward way to reach Koh Lipe from Langkawi is by taking a direct ferry. The ferry service is operated by several companies, especially during the high season (roughly November to May), when the sea is calm and the boats run multiple times daily.

  • Departure Point in Langkawi: The main ferry terminal used for Koh Lipe-bound boats is the Telaga Harbor Marina. The Kuah Jetty is sometimes used as well, depending on the operator.
  • Arrival Point in Koh Lipe: All domestic and international ferries arrive at Koh Lipe Pier. This is walking distance to the main walking street, which connects the pier to most beaches and hotels.
  • Schedule and Duration: The ferry takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to reach Koh Lipe. Most services run once or twice daily, typically in the mid-morning and early afternoon.
  • Booking: Tickets can be booked online through tour operators or bought at local travel agencies in Langkawi. It is recommended to book in advance during peak tourist months due to limited seats.
  • Cost: Prices usually range from 750 to 1,200 Thai Baht (approximately 25 to 40 USD) one-way.

In general, boat offerings which you find online and in-person at the pier will be the same. Prices are a little cheaper in person than buying online, but are more difficult to compare and are at risk of selling out if buying last-minute.

There are multiple sites to purchase ferry tickets, but we generally find 12GoAsia to be the best and cheapest. Klook is often a good option as well.

Important Travel Tips

  • Passport & Visa: Since this is an international border crossing, bring your passport. Many travelers get a visa on arrival or enter visa-free depending on their nationality. Double-check visa rules for Thailand in advance.
  • Customs and Immigration: You will pass through Malaysian exit immigration and Thai entry immigration upon arrival at Koh Lipe’s main pier. The process is generally smooth but can take some time during busy periods.
  • Travel Light: Most ferry operators have luggage restrictions, and space can be limited onboard, so travel light if possible.
  • Travel Insurance: Always a smart idea when traveling internationally, in case of poor weather or other travel disruption.

Alternative Routes (Not Recommended)

While some travelers consider indirect routes via Pak Bara Pier on the mainland, this is more time-consuming and complicated compared to the direct ferry from Langkawi. Using the direct ferry is faster, more comfortable, and an adventure in itself with stunning sea views. If you plan to visit the mainland, such as to visit Krabi, fly out of Phuket or take the train from Hat Yai, we’d recommend taking the ferry to Pak Bara Pier after your trip to Koh Lipe.

Summary: Langkawi to Koh Lipe

Getting to Koh Lipe from Langkawi is best done by a direct ferry, which takes about 1–1.5 hours. Be sure to arrange your tickets in advance during high season, carry your passport for immigration clearance, and pack light for a seamless journey. Enjoy the simple transfer through the beautiful Andaman Sea as you cross from Langkawi Malaysia to Thailand’s stunning Ko Lipe island.
