Dubrovnik Pass: Is it Worth Buying?

Dubrovnik is a popular spot located in the southern tip of Croatia, is famous for its well-preserved Old Town surrounded by beautiful City Walls. Popularity of the city has boomed in recent years, largely due to Game of Thrones, yet travelers have been raving about this beautiful and fascinating city for decades.

While researching your trip to Dubrovnik, you likely have stumbled on the Dubrovnik Pass, and have been asking yourself if it’s worth buying the Dubrovnik city pass.

And to quickly answer that question – YES, Dubrovnik Pass is worth it (for most travelers) and we will breakdown the reasons why, and what’s included in your Dubrovnik Pass ticket.

What is the Dubrovnik Pass? (1, 3, 7-Day options)

The Dubrovnik Pass gives you access to a dozen Dubrovnik attractions including the highly-sought after Dubrovnik City Walls, as well as free public bus pass within the city.

The Dubrovnik Pass costs as much as City Walls ticket – and that alone makes it worth it. If you’re going to do the Dubrovnik City Walls, then buying a Dubrovnik Pass instead is a no-brainer. If you are thinking to skip the City Walls, let us tell you this – you will be missing out. This was our favorite in all the things that we did and see in Dubrovnik, other travelers agree on this too. In fact, if you can only do one tour while in the Old Town, we hope you make it this one.

Dubrovnik Pass is available for 1, 3 and 7-day options. Price is of the Dubrovnik City Pass is 40 EUR 1-day, 50 EUR 3-day, 60 EUR 7-day. Dubrovnik Pass can be purchased online in advance, or in Tourist Board Offices (one in Pile Gate) or most major shops and hotels.

If you want to purchase the 1-day pass, note that it is valid 24 hours after first use. This is great as it allows you to use it over two days. The only thing that is not included in the 1-day pass is the access to Bukovac House Museum located in Cavtat (30-min drive from Old Town). With the 3 and 7-day passes, you can take your time exploring and have access to public buses for up to 168 hours, perfect if you want to do day trips.

It makes exploring Old Town convenient since you don’t have to line up and pay separately at each locations. One aspect that we really enjoyed is that we got to do everything, but only spend as much time as we wanted in each area. A few sites we would have been paying 20 EUR for entry, which we found out we didn’t have much interest in. We got to quickly see the highlights of that museum or exhibit without feeling the need to stay longer to make the price we paid feel worth it. We got to see it all and avoid the fear of missing out, while also avoiding ripped off if something didn’t meet our expectations. Because to be honest, a few of these sites would not be worth the price tag if you didn’t have the Dubrovnik city pass.

What is Included? (City Walls, Forts, Museums, Bus Tickets)

And the second most important question that you might have is – what is included in the Dubrovnik Pass? If you have opened the official link, you probably have seen the list of attractions you can visit. Here’s a little more information on each attraction.

We have made a list of the included attractions as well as the regular entry price if you are purchasing entrance separately. We even roughly ordered the list in order of the attractions we feel are most worth-while visiting, in case you’re short on time (with a 1-day city pass).

  1. City Walls, 40 EUR – You can walk the entire perimeter surrounding the Old Town of Dubrovnik where you can have panoramic views of the town, the Lokrum Island and the Adriatic Sea. (insert a box linking to the city walls in other Blog post – Know these essential tips when walking the Dubrovnik City Walls)
  2. Rector’s Palace, 15 EUR – A 15th century Gothic-Renaissance palace, one of the most impressive buildings in Dubrovnik. Now housing well- preserved rooms with beautiful furniture, paintings, period decor and well-decorated ceilings.
  3. Maritime Museum, 10 EUR – Located at St Johns Fort, a large museum featuring the naval history of Dubrovnik. Located at a City Wall entrance.
  4. Franciscan Church and Monastery, 6 EUR – Featuring Europe’s oldest pharmacy, beautiful courtyard and a small museum of religious artifacts.
  5. Dubrovnik Natural History Museum, 20 EUR – A private collection which is of course much smaller than national museums, however we surprisingly found the silk worm exhibit fascinating. Finding the entrance is a little tricky but you can find it on an alley on the left of the Jesuit Stairs. Once in the stairs, you will see a sign pointing to the entrance.
  6. Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik, 20 EUR – picturesque three floor museum showcasing a wide range of art — not just modern pieces.
  7. Ethnographic Museum “Rupe”, 8 EUR – It is a large museum showcasing the cultural history of Dubrovnik.
  8. Tvrđava Revelin Archaeological Museum, 6 EUR – A small museum yet full of artifacts, destroyed church fragments and medieval coins.
  9. House of Marin Držić, 5 EUR – A memorial museum dedicated to Croatian writer Marin Držić (1508-1567) and also called Dubrovnik’s Shakespeare. It is easy to miss this spot as there are not a lot of huge signs in the entrance.
  10. Pulitika Studio, 5 EUR – A small art studio dedicated to artist Duro Pulitika. Located near the Maritime Museum.
  11. Dulčić Masle Pulitika Gallery, 8 EUR – An art studio dedicated to the work of Mihaela Rašica.
  12. Bukovac House Museum 5 EUR – The birthplace of Vlaho Bukovac, famous Croatian painter, featuring numerous works. Located out of town in Cavtat. Only included in 3 and 7-day passes.
  13. Bus pass – 1-day costs 5 EUR, 3-day costs 12 EUR, 7-day costs 37 EUR.

The Math/Cost Breakdown: if you manage to visit every site in your 3-day Dubrovnik Pass for example, you’re getting 160 EUR in value on your 50 EUR ticket. As you can see, it’s certainly worth buying the Dubrovnik Pass. And this is just considering the attractions and bus pass. If you take advantage of the various discounts, you’ll save even more.
