There are numerous dead zones where phone service will not work, but you’ll have no problem connecting to data and phone service in most settlements. We’ll quickly show you the cell service dead zones along the Cabot Trail so you’re ready for your trip to Cape Breton Island.

As a rule of thumb, cell service will be non-existent or weak within Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It’s important to note that only a small portion of the Highway 30, Cabot Trail, runs through the park. The majority of the small towns on the border of the park, such as Ingonish, South Harbour and Chรฉticamp.

Most trails within the park will also have no cell service. This includes the Skyline Trail – most of the trail will have no data or cell reception. Downloading offline maps before your trip will likely save some headache.

In other areas of the Cabot Trail outside of the Highlands Park, cell service is much more reliable. This includes the main towns and the majority of the Cabot Trail road in between them, such as Baddeck, Margaree and Inverness. There are certainly spotty areas in the most remote parts of the Cabot Trail, but after driving 5 minutes further along the road you’ll be connected to cell service again.

Unfortunately most of the official Parks Canada campgrounds also have limited internet and cell service. Our favourite place to camp or cabin was was near Cape North/Dingwall or at Meat Cove (a 40-min drive from Cabot Trail). Beautiful, remote, and some cell service as it’s located just outside of the park boundaries.
