In this guide, we will explore the absolute must-visit beaches in Milos providing you with things to expect and note prior to your visit, so you can come prepared and enjoy the most of your beach day. So, pack your sunscreen and get ready to explore the island's sandy (and sometimes pebbly) treasures!
1. Sarakiniko: The Lunar Landscape
Many travelers visit Milos to witness the otherworldly beauty of Sarakiniko. Its smooth, white volcanic rocks sculpted by wind and waves create a lunar landscape unlike any other. The contrast of the stunning white rocks and the deep blue of the Aegean Sea is simply unmatched.
The beach itself is small, but the photogenic location alone is a top reason to visit Milos. Check out our full blog post on Sarakiniko beach so you will come prepared and don't miss any special spots.
- What to expect: Shallow turquoise waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling, dramatic rock formations ideal for sunbathing and exploring, and a photogenic shipwreck. The area is large so do not make the same mistake of exploring just the area by the beach.
- Things to note: There is limited shade, so bring an umbrella or arrive early. It can get crowded during peak season and late in the afternoon. There is an area where you can go cliff-diving, exercise caution especially when the weather is bad. Though a popular spot, there are no facilities in the area - no washrooms and no restaurants nearby.
2. Firopotamos: Picture-Perfect Beauty
Firopotamos beach is one of our favorite picturesque spots. It is famous for its turquoise waters and the traditional "syrmata" (boathouses) carved into the rocks along the shore. The crystal clear water and the backdrop of the mountainous landscape create a postcard-perfect scene.
- What to expect: Mix of sand and pebbles, shallow and clear turquoise waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling, and the unique architecture of the traditional boathouses right on the beach.
- Things to note: Access to Firopotamos beach involves a short walk down from the parking area. There is a small number of boutique hotels on it's shore.
Our beachfront hotel recommendations: Aquanis Anchored, Vilos Suites and Erginas Boat House
3. Fyriplaka: Colorful Cliffs and Sandy Shores
Fyriplaka is a long, sandy beach with towering, multicolored volcanic cliffs that create a spectacular backdrop. The shallow, calm waters make it ideal for families and those who prefer a relaxing swim.
- What to expect: Fyriplaka beach has soft sand perfect for lounging and calm turquoise waters with the option to rent sunbeds and umbrellas. You might also find some beach bars offering refreshments.
- Things to note: It can get busy during the summer months. Pro tip: Towards the right side of the beach (past the big rock formation), you can find more strips of sand to lounge and enjoy the sun.
4. Gerontas: Dramatic Beauty
On the southwestern coast of Milos island, Gerontas is a hidden gem for anyone seeking a stunning beach with less crowd. This sandy beach has dark grey volcanic sand and the natural arch that frames part of the beach is a particularly striking feature.

- What to expect: Unique dark volcanic sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling around the interesting rock formations, and a peaceful, less crowded atmosphere.
- Things to note: Access to Gerontas beach involves a drive down a cliff-side dirt road, followed by a 10 minute hike down the cliffs. No facilites or restaurants in the area.
5. Tsigrado: Adventure Rewarded
Located 300m from the bus stop of Fyriplaka beach, Tsigrado beach offers a unique beach experience. Reaching this cove involves a short but thrilling descent using ropes and ladders. The reward? A secluded sandy beach with crystal clear waters and a nearby small cave surrounded by a beautiful landscape.
- What to expect: Secluded and intimate atmosphere, plenty of snorkeling opportunities in the rocky surroundings, and a sense of accomplishment after the descent.
- Things to note: Going to Tsigardo beach is not recommended for those with mobility issues or a fear of heights. Bring sturdy shoes and be cautious. Do not miss the small cave on the left side of the beach.
6. Paleochori: Thermal Springs
Paleochori beach is a unique destination where the island's volcanic activity is still evident. The sand is a mix of pebbles and small stones, and in some areas, you can feel the warmth from underground thermal springs. The dramatic red and yellow cliffs add to the beach's striking beauty.
Unfortunately no photos as we didn't make it here - but it looks incredible.
- What to expect: Interesting geological formations, the possibility of experiencing warm spots in the sand, and several tavernas right on the beach serving fresh seafood cooked in volcanic sand ovens!
- Things to note: The water in Paleochori beach can get quite warm in certain areas due to the thermal activity. There are sunbeds available for rent.
7. Provatas: Golden Sands and Calm Waters
Located on the southern coast of Milos, Provatas beach is known for its long stretch of golden sand and shallow, crystal-clear waters. It's an excellent choice for families and anyone seeking a relaxing beach day.

- What to expect: Soft, golden sand, shallow and calm turquoise waters, and a relaxed atmosphere. Some parts of the beach are organized with sunbeds and umbrellas, and there are a few tavernas nearby.
- Things to note: Provatas can get windy, especially on days with northern winds. There's a small number of boutique hotels overlooking the beach.
Hotel recommendations overlooking Provatas Beach: Cave Beach House, Ninos Houses and Maistrali.
8. Alogomandra: A Hidden Cove with a Unique Feature
Alogomandra is a secluded beach characterized by its fine yellow sand and the impressive natural arch that provides shade. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming, and the setting is both romantic and scenic.

- What to expect: Long stretch of sandy beach and on the right side a small and sandy beach partially shaded by a cave, creating a unique swimming area. The waters are shallow and inviting.
- Things to note: Alogomandra is not organized, so bring your own supplies. It can get crowded in the small cove. The dirt road here is bumpy - drive slow.
9. Papafragas: Caves and Turquoise Inlets
Papafragas is not your typical sandy beach but rather a complex of sea caves and narrow inlets with turquoise water. You can jump in the water in one side of the cliffs, then swim under the rocks to reach various sandy beaches and other parts of the bay.
- What to expect: Dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling through the caves offering a sense of adventure.
- Things to note: Papafragas caves have very little actual sandy beach area, and access to the water involves a short walk down some steps, small parking space by the road.
10. Pollonia: Family-Friendly
Situated in the northeastern part of Milos, Pollonia beach is a family-friendly destination with a sandy beach, shallow waters, and natural shade from tamarisk trees. The village of Pollonia offers a lively atmosphere with tavernas and shops. The northern side of the beach is more remote, and offers good views of Kimolos island.
- What to expect: A sandy beach with shallow, clear waters, ideal for children. The beach is located next to the harbor, adding to the picturesque setting. Close to plenty of dining options and a washroom facility by the beach
- Things to note: Pollonia can be quite busy during peak season. The town is a nice stop, but the beach is best visited if you're already staying in a hotel in town.
Hotel recommendations close to Pollonia Beach: Unique Milos Suites, Om Living Milos and White Pebble Suites
11. Plathiena: Easily Accessible
Plathiena is a great option for sandy and picturesque beach without the hassle. An easy drive will take you to a parking lot steps from the sand. The waters are calm, the shore is sandy, and there are basic facilities and a small beach bar. Despite being ranked 11th, the views are still great, and since no hikes are involved its a great option if you need to reach some sand ASAP.
Other Notable Beaches:
- Kleftico Caves: Kleftico is not exactly a beach but requires a mention. Perhaps the most beautiful spot on all of Milos Greece, a boat tour is required to visit Kleftico.
- Triades Beach: A remote and picturesque beach; one of the few spots on the island perfectly situated for sunset.
- Agathia Beach: This is another remote cove on the sunset shore; an absolute hidden gem.
- Achivadolimni Beach: Long and sandy beach located across and a short drive from the main port town of Adamantas.
- Thiorichio Beach: Situated on the eastern coast of Milos, this location is famous for its old abandoned sulfur mines.
Tips for Beach Hopping in Milos:
- Rent a car or ATV: This will give you the freedom to explore the island's diverse beaches at your own pace. You can book car rental online so you don't have to worry about it. We rented a car and we found that driving in Milos is easier than we expected. The roads are wide and paved, several uphills and downhills (you are driving around the island after all) with occasional tight streets on downtown areas due to other cars parked. Overall, we did not have any problem.
- Bring water and snacks: Not all beaches have facilities, so it's always good to be prepared.
- Wear comfortable footwear: Especially if you plan on visiting beaches like Tsigrado or Papafragas.
- Check the wind conditions: Some beaches might be more sheltered than others depending on the wind direction.
- Don't forget your snorkeling gear! The crystal-clear waters around Milos are perfect for underwater exploration.
